Bitmain has released firmware updates for the Antminer S21 and S19k Pro that permanently disable the microUSB port. Experts have analyzed what the move means for mining rig maintenance and the installation of third-party software.

The Bitcoin mining industry is on edge after Bitmain decided to release a firmware update that, in addition to optimizing device performance, introduces a major restriction: it permanently disables the microUSB ports on key Antminer models including the S21, S21 Pro, S21 XP and S19k Pro.

For years, one open controversy in the mining community hung over every miner like a sword of Damocles.

That controversy was the function associated with “Antbleed.” Bitmain, once the dominant global mining rig supplier, had previously built a remote status verification function into Antminer machines. The company described it as an anti-theft mechanism designed to prevent stolen or illegally used mining rigs from operating, but it sparked broad concern because it gave the company a degree of control over whether the machines could run.

In 2017, after security experts exposed the Antbleed vulnerability tied to the function, Bitmain released a firmware update that removed it.

On the surface, the move looked like a technical patch. In reality, it marked a kind of curtain call for the industry’s more unruly era of expansion.

The Controversial Hand

First, it is worth clarifying what the Antbleed-related function actually was.

In simple terms, Bitmain had previously embedded a remote status verification mechanism in Antminer mining rigs.

The official explanation was that if a mining rig was stolen or used illegally, the mechanism could remotely restrict the device from running and help users avoid losses.

That sounded reasonable at first. But for miners, the idea that expensive mining rigs they had purchased could still be constrained by a manufacturer’s remote mechanism created a centralized control risk that ran against blockchain’s core belief in decentralization, naturally triggering strong concern.

It was like buying a car, driving it home, and then discovering that the manufacturer still held an identity verification system that could prevent the vehicle from starting if verification failed.

In a world built around the belief in decentralization, the existence of this kind of manufacturer-led centralized control was itself an irony.

The Giant’s Turn

Why did Bitmain make this adjustment? In fact, Antbleed had already been exposed by security experts in 2017, setting off a major uproar at the time.

But back then, the mining industry giant was at the peak of its power, controlling the vast majority of global computing power, and it did not immediately compromise.

According to industry insiders, the original reason was to prevent customers from cracking the firmware to overclock the machines.

The U.S. believes Bitmain mining rigs deployed near American military bases were stealing intelligence. This fix is likely also part of a compliance overhaul for the U.S.: permanently eliminating Bitmain’s ability to remotely control American-owned assets, removing any possibility that U.S. IT equipment operating status could be sent from the United States to Chinese servers or Chinese companies, and avoiding any U.S. perception that Bitmain is stealing operational data from the American power grid.

But the industry landscape has changed. As the sector has matured, miners have become more rational in their choices and no longer rely solely on a single brand. At the same time, the blockchain industry’s demands for equipment ownership and decentralization have become clearer, making centralized control mechanisms in mining rigs a major drag on brand trust.

More importantly, the public pressure after the Antbleed vulnerability was exposed turned the controversial mechanism into a latent risk for Bitmain’s brand trust.

Put politely, this update responds to calls from the community. Put more bluntly, Bitmain is trying to regain trust lost to the controversy over centralized control.

It is telling miners: “Don’t worry. From now on, control over these machines will truly be handed back to you.”

After all, Bitmain once held the industry’s voice through its computing power advantage. Today, competition is more diversified, and brand trust matters far more.

Facing community demands for decentralization and pressure from public opinion, even an industry giant has had to adjust its previous centralized control strategy.

Power Returns to Users

At the core of this change is the removal of the controversial remote status verification module from mining rigs.

Previously, mining rigs would send device identity information to Bitmain’s servers every one or two minutes for status verification. The server could then return specific instructions determining whether the mining rig should continue operating.

Now, that recurring verification logic has been fully deleted. The mining rig has become an autonomous money-making tool, no longer asking the manufacturer’s servers for permission to run.

This reduction in remote manufacturer intervention better fits the digital asset sector’s demand for independent control over equipment.

We often emphasize distribution and decentralization, and centralized control at the hardware layer can indeed become a hidden risk to decentralized consensus. Removing this controversial mechanism is a step toward a more genuine form of decentralization.

If the hardware layer still preserves a manufacturer-led centralized logic, then all the consensus mechanisms built above it ultimately carry an unstable hidden risk.

Is Bitmain’s removal of this controversial function a victory for miners?

Yes, but not entirely. It reflects a deeper reality: in a world where interests are tightly intertwined, no form of power should be trusted absolutely, even when it claims to be “protecting you.”

The removal of the Antbleed-related function marks a shift in mining hardware from “manufacturer-led centralized control” toward “respect for users’ independent control.”

Bitmain has finally understood that, under the industry’s consensus, the core value of a mining rig maker should be to provide reliable hardware and service, not to control equipment through centralized mechanisms.

In the blockchain industry, one core logic of brand trust is convincing users that a manufacturer will not abuse its control.

From this perspective, although Bitmain’s earlier fix for the Antbleed-related function came somewhat late, it was unquestionably a necessary step in line with the industry’s consensus.
