On Dec. 8, 2025, MicroBT, a leading global Bitcoin mining rig maker, held a launch event for its WhatsMiner M73 series at the Conrad Hotel Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi, UAE, under the theme “Green-Driven, Ecosystem Reshaped.” The company unveiled two new hydro-cooling mining rigs: the M73 and M73S+.

The mining rig industry is now facing a two-pronged competitive push from Bitmain: aggressive clearance pricing at the low end and a new high-end flagship at the top. Bitmain’s S21 series has disrupted pricing with steep discounts, while its newly released Antminer S23 Hyd. hydro-cooling flagship has set a fresh industry benchmark with 580T of computing power and energy efficiency of 9.5 J/T. MicroBT’s M73 series breaks new ground in overclocked computing power, but it still trails the S23 Hyd. on energy efficiency, pushing competition among top vendors into a new phase of technical segmentation.

Competition in the mining rig market is becoming increasingly polarized:

On one side, Bitmain has sharply cut prices on the S21 and other mining rig lines, bringing some models down to roughly 30% to 50% of peak levels. Several models are priced more than 30% below the start of the year, and some have effectively been halved, allowing Bitmain to clear inventory quickly while reshaping pricing logic across the industry.

On the other side, Bitmain also launched its high-end hydro-cooling flagship, the S23 Hyd., at the 2025 World Digital Mining Summit, resetting the industry ceiling with core specifications of 580 TH/s and 9.5 J/T energy efficiency. The model uses a closed-loop liquid cooling design, with total power consumption of just 5,510W, chip temperatures held below 45°C, a maintenance cycle of up to six months, and operating noise below 65 decibels, making it a preferred option for professional mining farms.

Under this dual strategy, peers such as MicroBT must respond on both price-performance and top-tier technology.

Against that backdrop, the M73 series unveiled by MicroBT directly benchmarks Bitmain’s latest product line, using technical advantages to offset pressure from the price war. Key comparisons for the new models are as follows:

• M73S+ (10KW hydro-cooling version): under 7.5KW operating conditions, power efficiency (PE) falls to as low as 12.5 joules per terahash (J/T), with computing power ranging from 540T to 600T.

A water inlet temperature impact curve shown at the launch indicated that the model delivers stable performance across inlet water temperatures from 30°C to 60°C, highlighting the adaptability of its hydro-cooling technology. Even so, its energy efficiency still lags the S23 Hyd. by 3 J/T.

• M73 (10KW hydro-cooling version): under standard 7KW operating conditions, power efficiency is 14.5 J/T, with computing power of 470T to 526T.

In overclocking mode, computing power can rise to about 630T, exceeding the S23 Hyd.’s 580T ceiling. But the energy-efficiency gap widens further to 5 J/T, and power consumption climbs to 10KW under overclocking, higher than the S23 Hyd.’s rated 5,510W.

In comparison, Bitmain’s S23 Hyd., its latest flagship, clearly outperforms the M73 series on energy efficiency. The M73, meanwhile, wins back ground on peak computing power through overclocking, setting up a differentiated contest of “energy efficiency versus computing power” and another direct clash between the No. 1 and No. 2 companies in the mining rig market.

MicroBT, formally Shenzhen MicroBT Electronics Technology Co., Ltd., was founded in 2016 and is headquartered in Shenzhen, China. It is the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency mining rig maker and a national high-tech enterprise with the ability to develop chips across multiple specifications.

MicroBT founder Dr. Yang Zuoxing previously served as Bitmain’s chip design director, leading chip design for hit Antminer models including the S7 and S9.

In 2016, Yang failed to reach an agreement with Bitmain co-founder Zhan Ketuan over equity. Yang later recalled: “At the time, Wu Jihan was willing to offer 2% of the shares, while Zhan Ketuan was only willing to offer 0.5%.

Yang left Bitmain as a result, then founded MicroBT and launched WhatsMiner. After its founding, WhatsMiner rose to second place in the industry at unusual speed.

At the event, MicroBT founder and CEO Dr. Yang Zuoxing said in his keynote that the M73 series represents a major technological leap for the company across core dimensions including power efficiency, computing power, and power density, and is a key result in advancing the global crypto mining industry’s green transition.

Facing Bitmain’s dual competitive push, MicroBT is building its moat around “computing power flexibility and scenario adaptability.” The M73 series’ overclocking mode can meet miners’ short-term demand for computing power surges, while its wide 30°C to 60°C temperature adaptability better suits overseas mining farms operating in varied environments. Yang also acknowledged, however, that the industry still has room to catch up in extreme energy efficiency.

The launch brought together operators from leading global crypto mining companies, certified liquid cooling solution providers, energy policy experts, and computing power analysts for in-depth discussions on computing power technology iteration, green energy integration, and sustainable development trends in the industry.

Industry observers said Bitmain’s combined strategy of clearing inventory at low prices through the S21 and other series while using the S23 Hyd. to set a high-end benchmark allows it to capture the small and midsize miner market while reinforcing its advantage in large-scale mining farms. MicroBT’s M73 series, by contrast, targets the middle of the market: buyers seeking higher computing power ceilings while controlling equipment costs. Although it trails the S23 Hyd. on energy efficiency, its 630T overclocked computing power and relatively accessible pricing could still appeal to customers sensitive to short-term returns.

As a leading company in Bitcoin mining rig hardware, MicroBT has long treated technological innovation as its core competitive strength, and the Abu Dhabi launch reflects its global product strategy. Still, as the mining rig industry moves toward extreme energy efficiency, the gap between the M73 series and Bitmain’s S23 Hyd. also points to a widening R&D hierarchy among leading vendors in core chips and cooling technology.

Looking ahead, as mining difficulty continues to rise and energy costs remain elevated, energy efficiency may become the central battleground for mining rig competition. Whether MicroBT can narrow the gap with the industry’s top tier will directly shape the trajectory of its global market share.
